Ngāti Kahungunu Incorporated recently issued a pānui making it clear they want the practice of streaming in schools to end and instead ‘advocate for a system that upholds mana ōrite, reflects kaupapa Māori, and empowers all learners to succeed as Māori.’
The pānui also outlined concerns regarding the proposed changes to NCEA. It identified three key risks:
- Early ability grouping based on literacy and numeracy performance
- Reduced flexibility in subject selection
- Binary tracking into vocational vs academic pathway
