He Au Nui, He Au Ora Report

In 2019 Tokona te Raki published the first edition of He Awa Ara Rau, a research report tracking the journey of rangatahi Māori through education and into employment. The big idea underpinning the 2019 report was to look at the system as a whole and to identify patterns that could help to understand the barriers rangatahi Māori face in education that limit their education success. Streaming/harmful ability grouping was identified as one factor, that despite global research highlighting the damage of it, the practice, is still common in our schools.

Five years on, this new report He Au Nui, He Au Ora explores the notion that rangatahi Māori thrive when they learn as Māori, in culturally enriching environments that align with their identity.

With our changing demographics, this must be a key consideration to moving forward together as a country. Culturally enriched education builds understanding of how we work together towards a brighter future for all New Zealanders.
